By definition, rational numbers may be expressed as fractions. On the other hand, irrational numbers may never be expressed as fractions.

π = 3.1415926... is an irrational number because there is no way that it may be expressed as a fraction.
Simply, Rational numbers are numbers that can be written to ratio, so it can be written too into fraction, where both numerator and denominator are whole numbers while Irrational numbers can't be written as fraction but they can be written as decimal.
Another is whole numbers are rational, for ex. 120, this can be 120/1 while for example the square root of 21, this has endless non-repeating answer, so this is irrational number.
